Commentary Post

Following on the heels of last week’s Denarutofied 500, I’d like to present a new standard feature for our manga rankings (can anything be a ’standard feature’ when I haven’t even been doing this 9 months yet?)

I’m calling this the “Midlist 500″

Taking the top 5 ranked series out of the list (this week: Naruto, Death Note, Bleach, Fruits Basket, and Fullmetal Alchemist) (and 4 of those 5 will likely be the same week-to-week for many months to come) I then re-run the list with what’s left.

The top 5 series account for 120 volumes, 112 of which are in the Top 500 — so not only do we make it easier to see some of the other manga that may be deserving of notice, we get to pull in another 9 dozen (plus) volumes on the bottom of the chart. I mean, I see those all the time since it’s my spreadsheet and all (1229 volumes in the raw chart this week) (not to mention the fact that I do all of my own data entry so yes I have seen these titles many many times before) but I thought this exercise might be of interest for the rest of you.

(aside: denarutofy is a word; I myself have used it six times already. Citations: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and last week)

And an editorial note: For some titles — past #395 on this chart — publishing information is incomplete, because as mentioned I’m doing all the damn data entry myself and there are limits to what I can manage in a single week. I’m workin’ on it, ok?
