The end-note-bit:
For these rankings I looked at 12 different Top 50 Bestseller lists, from 8 different online sales sites
Amazon and B&N were checked 8am Tuesday, 9pm Tuesday, and 3am (yes, gods-forsaken 3AM EST) Wednesday. And then we ran the numbers and posted them to go with your Wednesday Morning Oatmeal. You can thank my insomnia, and you’re welcome. (All other sites were checked once, Tuesday Evening)
For the list found each time, titles scored 1 point, and an additional point for each rank above 50. (#1 = 50 points; if a title was #1 for the entire time period at Amazon, for example, it would have scored a total of 150 points.)
It’s that time of year: I dearly love the Far Side calendars, too, but no matter how nice — a calendar isn’t a graphic novel. I just skipped ‘em and moved on to the next real book; Amazon had the most but a couple of other sources also list calendars.
–The quote this week is either so old that it is credited to ‘anonymous,’ was passed around usenet (back in the day) so much that original attribution is no longer possible, or most likely, such an obvious joke (to statisticians) that it was independently derived by multiple people. The quotes are a handy way for me to not take this stuff so seriously — I give credit where I can but I won’t waste a lot of time on it.

[…] I posted the actual numbers early on the morning of the 14th, so maybe I’d subconsciously had enough of dead Latin calendar systems and just split the difference anyway. (you might go refresh yourself with that Top 100 list, if you had a minute, because the rest of this article is ostensively a commentary on those sales rankings. Though I wander a bit.) […]

[…] Since the USA Today numbers have been out for a couple of days, though, I can take a look at the USA Today Top 150 Books for their very few graphic novel and manga listings, to see if that helps put my charts (comparative rankings of both the Top 100 Graphic Novels and Top 100 Manga by online sales) into perspective: […]

[…] The only reason to attempt such an effort (and I gave it a shot for a month or three) is to point the readership past 20+-year-old comics to Jeff Smith or Jeff Kinney or Shaun Tan, and that is better accomplished directly through reviews and recommendations. […]
