Manga Watch List: 8-14 April
I can’t be sure how I messed it up (or which of my sources it would be handy to blame) but it looks like a batch of Tokyopop titles were erroneously included on the 3/25 list. Well, now it looks like they will be released sometime this week. I typed all that stuff in again, but just so you know the relevant T’pop titles, on the list they’re marked*.

##
The titles released this week by Tokyopop are a mix of OEL manga, manhwa, and the usual; along with a few manga-related novels. I’ve got galleys of the Trinity Blood and Twelve Kingdoms books, and have bought a few of these in the past: Crest of the Stars, .hack// Another Birth, & Duan Surk. Some are lightly illustrated (interstitial art, not really meant as a comics panel) while others will be straight text. If you spot these in the store, you might flip through before buying to see what you think of the presentation.
Since the nice HarperCollins folks were kind enough to bring the advance reader’s copies by the store, (HC is Tokyopop’s distributor) I guess I really should return the favor and write a review of one or both. It’s manga-related, right? No one is going to complain if I review a book or two…
Duan Surk has been sitting toward the bottom of my stacks for a while; I started the first one but set it aside before I finshed it (not exactly a glowing recommendation, is it? [*grin*]) but I ordered the second volume anyway. In for a penny, in for a pound. I’ll be able to give you a better idea of the series relative merits after I’ve read both. These are fantasy novels told from the point of view of a character inside a computer RPG, so if the concept sounds interesting or you’re a WoW junkie you might give these a look.
What else this week? Someday’s Dreamers, the Dark Goodbye, and Utopia’s Avenger are also on order; I’m going to have to actually see and read a bit of anything else this week, before I’ll have an idea of what I’d like.

[…] This seems to be an unusually good week for new manga. At Same Hat, Ryan and Evan are psyched about new volumes of Dragon Head and Death Note. David Welsh is envisioning an iron cage match between Tohru Honda, the brothers Elric, and Light Yagami. Taking a broader perspective, the MangaCast team runs the entire list and picks their favorites. At Comicsnob, Matt Blind has his own list and picks. […]

[…] And the rest of the list? 2000 AD is clocking in with #’s 1529 and 1530. I know these as the source for Judge Dredd, but must admit ignorance beyond that. We’ve got more Complete Peanuts from Fantagraphics, and Pirates vs. Ninjas #4 (of 4) which is either a genius piece of work or just someone cashing in on the internet meme (my vote goes to the latter). There is also quite a bit of manga, but I’ve been tracking the manga separately on Sundays, and using lists from other distributors (that serve the bookstore market) so looking at the Diamond list usually just confuses me.
