Wednesday Watch List 12/20/06

Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday! Every fanboy’s favorite day of the week. And who are we kidding? It’s mine too. It’s pretty much downhill from here on the work week, and new comic books hit the stores.

We’re going to try to let you know every Wednesday morning what looks like it’s going to be worth your hard-earned money before you head to your LCS. We’re not going to pretend that this is a complete, unbiased opinion. It’ll probably be short on the big two, and pretty long in smaller press. In fact, it’ll probably line up pretty precisely to what Bob’s going to be picking up that week. Is that wrong? If you don’t agree, leave a comment.

So let’s get started.

  • Elephantmen #5 - Starkings and company have been giving us one great story after another in the Elephantmen universe. I was immediately hooked on the concept ever since reading Hip Flask: Mystery City, and I’ve been tracking down everything related to it since.
  • Criminal #3 - I felt that may the second issue wasn’t as great as the first, or maybe I just got caught up in the excitement and thought more highly of the first than I would normally. Let me re-read them and get back to you, but until then, I’m pretty sure it’s still going to be a good story. I’m picking it up.
  • John Woo’s 7 Brothers #3 - Again, it’s a concept by John Woo. Do I need to say more? If I do, go check out my previous reviews and come back. Back yet? Alright, just go buy this one.
  • Lone Ranger #3 - It’s been a great re-telling so far. I put each issue down and wish I had the next in my hands already.

This next section is stuff that should probably be pretty good, but I haven’t checked out any previous issues, so I can’t personally vouch for them.

  • Fables #56 - I finally read the reprint of the first issue that they put out to entice people into buying the trade paperback. It was good. It’s just going to be a while until I get caught up.
  • Red Menace #2 - I picked issue #1 up, flipped through it, and put it back. I’ve heard good things, though, and I’ll probably pick it up in the next couple of weeks.
  • Testament #13 - Another issue #1 I read courtesy of online reprint (via the Vertigo website). It’s good if you like re-tellings of Jewish mythology. I do, so I’ll get caught up - probably in the trades.
  • Y: The Last Man #52 - Yet another one available via online reprint. I’m going to have to get this one in trades, and if you’re not reading it, so should you.
  • Wasteland #5 - I’ve heard very very good things. I just can’t find the first issue in any of my LCS’s, and I want to hit that first… Before I get too far behind.
