Okay, I’m going to come out and say it, because every other review I’ve seen pans this issue because of it: no members of The Authority appear in this book. Frankly, I don’t care. If a story can suck me in without showing me the title characters, what’s the big deal?
My only experience with The Authority so far has been the first 12 Warren Ellis issues. I haven’t read anything related since (unless you count the current A Man Called Kev mini-series). At any rate, I think I know what the big reveal is at the end, but I don’t want to sound like a dumbass (or give away spoilers) to you kids who are way more “down” than me.
The art’s good. The writing’s good. Nothing stood out for me this issue except for it’s grasp of current affairs. If you’re paying attention, you notice that the news items coming across the TV in the book just happened a few weeks ago in the real world. Hooray for writing and lettering in the digital age. As for the rest of the book, I was interested in what was going on, and that’s good enough for me. I’m just waiting for Midnighter to show up and destroy some evil-doers.
