While not as awe-inspiring as the first issue, this is still a good read. We see John’s first interactions with Tonto, and it is immediately obvious that he is not just going to be some sidekick.
Tonto is a strong character who is certain to hold his own in a fight.

This issue’s story seems a bit disjointed, but it is also obvious that we are coming to some sort of conflict and resolution. New characters are introduced, and their appearances serve to add folds in the plot, but we don’t really seem to learn much.

Tonto’s personification is tricky. I can understand the tightrope that has to be walked when writing such a character. We see times when our (through John) stereotypical assumptions about him as a character and as an Indian are challenged, but there are also times when Matthews almost seems to play into the stereotype in order to show Tonto’s strength through what can be perceived as “savagery.”

Like I said, this is a good read. It’s so-so, but seems to be making promises to us about future events, so I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.
